As the official first day of fall passes and the weather (hopefully) begins to cool down, the thoughts of many are filled with pumpkins, apples, cinnamon and a variety of warm drinks. Fall is the perfect time to break out the cookbooks and fill kitchens with tasty treats. While most will make the usual pumpkin bread or apple cider, there are more creative fall snacks out there. Here is a list of unconventional fall treats from famous cookbooks that will make your grandma proud.

Apple Cider Churros

Apple Cider Churros offer a different twist on the more conventional apple-flavored treats seen during the fall season. 



If there are two things that fall brings, they’re hot apple cider and churros from fall festivals. The “Joy of Cooking” cookbook decided that nothing would make a tastier fall treat than combining the two.

Ingredients: 

  • 2 ½ cups apple cider
  • 1 stick of butter
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3 eggs
  • Canola oil
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg

Directions:

Step 1: In medium saucepan heat apple cider and add butter and kosher salt. Bring cider to a boil and melt the butter. Once butter is melted, remove from heat and add flour. Stir until dough forms a ball and cool for five minutes.

Step 2: Stir in eggs one at a time. Fill a skillet with 3 inches of canola oil and heat at 350 Farenheit. Put dough in a piping bag while oil heats.

Step 3: In small saucepan combine sugar, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Pipe the dough into the oil in the pan in lengths of five inches. Fry until golden brown, drain, and toss in sugar mixture.

Optional: Serve with melted dark chocolate.

Pumpkin Pudding Dump Cake

This pumpkin pudding dump cake is a more original alternative to pumpkin bread. 



For those craving pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread, this recipe from the “Betty Crocker Cookbook” is a perfect in-between. 

Ingredients:

  • 1 box vanilla instant pudding and pie filling mix
  • 1 ½ cups of milk
  • 1 box Betty Crocker Supermoist Yellow Cake Mix
  • ½ cup of pumpkin from a 15 oz. can
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • ¼ cup Betty Crocker rich and creamy cream cheese frosting

Directions:

Step 1: Heat oven to 350 Fahrenheit and spray 13 x 9 inch pan with cooking spray.

Step 2: In large bowl mix pudding mix and milk until thickened. Add cake mix, pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice until mixed. Spread into pan.

Step 3: Bake 30-35 minutes and cool 15 minutes before serving.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Dream Bars

These peanut-butter dream bars are a decadent take on the autumnal combination of chocolate and peanut butter.

Peanut butter and pecan bars are the perfect treat for fall gatherings, however, there is no combination that beats chocolate and peanut butter. Which is why this recipe from the “Betty Crocker Cookbook” is a scarily good treat for a Halloween party this fall. 

Ingredients:

  • Betty Crocker double chocolate chunk cookie mix
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons of cold coffee or water
  • 1 egg
  • 1 8-oz. package of cream cheese softened
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  • 1 container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 9-oz bag of chopped Reese’s Minis
  • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 3 oz. melted bittersweet baking chocolate
  • 1 cup unsalted dry-roasted peanuts

Directions:

Step 1: Heat oven to 340 Fahrenheit. In large bowl stir cookie mix, vegetable oil, coffee or water, and egg until it forms a dough. Spread the dough in 13 x 9 inch pan, cook for 12-15 minutes, and cool for 30 minutes.

Step 2: In large bowl mix cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Fold in whipped topping and and cookies and spread over the cookie.

Step 3: In small bowl mix peanut butter, milk, and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Microwave in a microwave-safe bowl uncovered for 30 to 60 seconds. Drizzle mixture over filling, drizzle melted chocolate, and sprinkle with peanuts. Refrigerate for an hour and serve.
